Sustainable Ships developed a customized decarbonization tool to support long-term sustainability decision-making

Van Oord required a dedicated internal tool to support long-term decarbonisation strategy across its fleet. The objective was to move beyond one-off studies and create a reusable framework that allows teams to explore scenarios, compare technical options, and understand the implications of different sustainability pathways over time.

Sustainable Ships supported the development of Van Oord’s own Decarbonizer tool, providing ongoing technical input on decarbonisation methods, technologies, and onboard implementation. This included weekly support focused on applying the tool to two vessels, helping translate high-level sustainability ambitions into vessel-specific scenarios and practical considerations.

Key highlights

  • Shipowner (dredging contractor)

  • Long-term decarbonization strategy and scenario planning tool development

  • Dredging vessels, including cutter suction hopper dredgers

“Sustainable Ships is a great initiative and start up; all employees are fully dedicated to help the Maritime Sector to decarbonize! The overall approach helps a larger company as Van Oord to differentiate in depth on the decarbonisation options provided in the overview. The background knowledge at Van Oord, on its turn, helps Sustainable Ships to further professionalize with respect to qualitative answering. It was really nice to cooperate with the Sustainable Ships’ team.”

- Martin de Geus - Team Lead Equipment Van Oord
