Sustainable Ships developed a practical decarbonization tool to support education and applied analysis in inland shipping.

The Refit Alliance is a Dutch initiative focused on accelerating sustainability in inland shipping through collaboration, open innovation, and education. A central objective of the project was to improve understanding of the technical and economic implications of decarbonising inland waterway vessels, particularly among students and early-career professionals.

Sustainable Ships supported this ambition by extending its Decarbonizer tool to the inland shipping segment and making it available for educational use. The adapted tool allows users to simulate and compare decarbonisation options for inland vessels in a structured and realistic way, supporting applied analysis rather than abstract theory. The tool was used by students and stakeholders to explore fuel choices, technologies, and retrofit scenarios in an educational setting.
